Onboarding

This is the approved revision of this page, as well as being the most recent.

Onboarding is the short tutorial that runs right after you create your account. It explains the basics in a few screens and ends with the two gifts every new pilot gets: a Cessna 172 Skyhawk and a small hangar at the airport you choose.

The tutorial steps

The tutorial is a sequence of screens: Welcome to Pilops, Cargo and passengers, Cargo and passengers detailed, Aircraft, Airlines, First aircraft and First flight. The first five are reading only; they introduce the ideas that the rest of this wiki covers in detail:

  • Every airport in the world has demand for cargo and passengers, and demand depends on the airport's size and location. See Airport size and demand.
  • Each delivery pays Pilops Coins, the in-game currency. See Pilops Coins.
  • You cannot fly any aircraft from the simulator's hangar. You fly the aircraft you own or rent in Pilops. See Fleet.
  • You can fly alone or in an airline with other pilots. See Companies.

Choosing your base airport

The First aircraft step asks for the airport where you want to receive the Cessna. Type the ICAO code (for example SBVT or LPPT) and the next screen shows the jobs currently available there, so you can judge whether it is a good place to start. You can go back and change the airport as many times as you like at this point.

The screen warns: This will be the location of your first aircraft and cannot be changed. That is true. Once you confirm, the aircraft and the hangar are created at that airport and the hangar stays there. You can buy more hangars elsewhere later, but this first one does not move.

A good base airport has jobs on the list and is somewhere you know how to fly from in the simulator. A medium or large airport usually has more jobs than a small strip. See Airport size and demand.

What you receive

When you confirm the airport, Pilops creates:

  • a Cessna 172 Skyhawk that belongs to you,
  • a small hangar at that airport, for free, with the Cessna parked in it,
  • your first flight, already opened in the flight planner with the Cessna selected.

From there, continue with Your first flight.

Who gets the free aircraft

The gift is only available to new pilots: level 1 and no flight hours. If you already flew, the tutorial shows This tutorial is only available for new users. and you will need to buy or rent an aircraft instead. See Buying an aircraft and Renting an aircraft.
