Help:Writing a tutorial

Writing a tutorial — a community tutorial is a page written by a pilot, for pilots: a step-by-step guide to something you have figured out. How to set up a profitable regional operation, how to get a smooth landing score in a specific aircraft, how to run a company's hubs. Any pilot with a Pilops account can write one, in any language.
Tutorials are different from the reference pages (the sections listed on the Main Page): reference pages describe how Pilops works and are translated by the wiki; tutorials are your own voice and stay in the language you wrote them in.
Before you start
- Sign in with your Pilops account. The login button on the wiki uses the same account as the game; your wiki username is your Pilops nickname.
- Search first. Someone may have written a tutorial on the same topic. Improving it is as welcome as writing a new one.
- Pick a clear title, such as Bush flying in Alaska with the Cessna 172 or Tutorial: your first company hub.
Creating the page
- Type the title in the wiki search box and press Enter.
- If no page has that title, the results page offers to create it. Click the red link.
- Write in the visual editor. It works like a document: headings, lists, bold, links. If you prefer wikitext, switch the editor from the pencil menu.
- At the end of the page, add the category so the tutorial is listed with the others. In the visual editor, open the menu (three lines) → Categories and add Community tutorials. In wikitext, put this on the last line:
[[Category:Community tutorials]]
- Click Save, write a short summary of what you did, and save again.
What happens after you save
The wiki has a quick review step. Your page (or your edit to an existing page) is saved immediately and you can see it while signed in, but it is not shown to visitors until someone from the review group has approved it. This is what keeps the public pages free of spam and broken drafts.
You do not need to do anything to request the review; saved revisions enter the queue automatically. If a few days pass and nothing happens, ask on Discord.
Writing tips
- Say what the reader will get in the first paragraph, and which aircraft, level or situation it applies to.
- Use steps for anything the reader has to do in order. Use short paragraphs for everything else.
- Link to the reference pages when you mention a mechanic, for example
[[Landing score]]or[[Stands]], instead of explaining it again. - Do not paste prices or numbers you have not checked in the game recently. The economy changes between updates.
- Images cannot be uploaded to the wiki at the moment. Describe the screen in words, or link to a screenshot hosted elsewhere.
